Pattern Sections

Learn more: tracking multi-section knitting patterns

Why one running total is not enough

A cast-on, ribbing, body and shaping section each have their own row target. One counter tells you how many rows you have knit but not how close any single section is to done. With a counter per section you can see that the ribbing is finished, the body is 80% done and the shaping has not started.

The overall percentage adds up current rows over target rows for every section that has a target. A section that has gone past its target counts as complete and is not counted above 100%.

How the days-left estimate works

The estimate divides the rows remaining by your average rows per day. Rows remaining is the sum of target minus current for each section that has a target and is not marked done. The average is your rows logged over the last 7 calendar days, today included, divided by 7.

Take the starting template, with targets of 10, 20, 80 and 30 rows, so 140 rows in all. If you knit 21 rows over the last week, the average is 3 rows a day and the estimate is 47 days, rounded up. Days with no knitting count as zero, so the figure follows your recent pace, not your best days.

Tapping minus, or using undo, takes the row back out of today's total, so a slip of the finger does not inflate your pace.

Setting up sections

Sections work best when they match the natural breaks in the pattern, such as cast-on, ribbing, each chart and bind-off. Your projects are saved in this browser on this device. The share link carries only section names and targets, not your progress.

FAQ

Why average over 7 days and not the whole project?

Your pace changes with the pattern section and with how busy the week is. A 7-day window follows your recent speed, where a whole-project average would mix in rows knit weeks ago under different conditions.

What counts toward rows remaining?

Only sections with a target above zero that are not marked done. A section with no target, such as a notes section, is left out of the estimate.

Should I make a section per chart or a few big ones?

One section per natural break in the pattern gives the clearest picture. You can see which phase you are in without reading raw row numbers, and each target is a small, checkable number.
