How usable square footage is calculated
Leather hides are irregular in shape - they have curved edges, veins, and natural inconsistencies. Not all of the hide's total area is usable for pattern pieces. Usable percentage varies by cut type: a whole hide yields about 82% usable material because of shape irregularities; a side (half hide) is cleaner and yields 87%; a shoulder is less regular at 72%; and a bend (a more uniform cut) yields 85%. For example, a 20 square-foot side hide with 87% usability gives 17.4 square feet of actual usable leather for your pieces.
Planning for material shortfall
If your pattern pieces require more leather than one hide provides after accounting for waste, this calculator tells you how many hides you need. It assumes all hides are the same size and cut type. In practice, leather can have color or character variations between hides, so many leatherworkers order one extra hide for testing, dye matching, or replacement if pieces are damaged during cutting.

Why do different hide cuts have different usable percentages?
Hide shape varies by cut type. A whole hide is the entire animal skin, with irregular outer edges and curvature. A side is a lengthwise half, which is cleaner but still curved. Should I add extra leather for mistakes or test pieces?
Yes. This calculator tells you the minimum needed. In practice, add 5-10% extra for test cuts, dye-lot matching, or mistakes during cutting. If your pattern uses 15 square feet, calculate as if you need 16-17 square feet to account for real-world waste and experimentation.

Not exactly. The percentages here are averages across typical hides. Thicker or thinner leather, and differences in tanning method, can affect how much is truly usable.
