Why HEIC needs converting

Apple's camera format support page says HEIF and HEVC offer better compression than JPEG and H.264, so they use less storage space on your devices and in iCloud Photos while keeping the same visual quality. Photos saved this way as HEIC are smaller, but many apps outside Apple's ecosystem, and older tools in particular, cannot open them directly.

The converter decodes each HEIC or HEIF photo to a JPEG in your browser at the quality you set, then places the JPEGs on PDF pages. Nothing leaves your device.

How the page options work

Page size can be A4, Letter or the size of each page's first photo. The one-up, two-up and four-up layouts put 1, 2 or 4 photos on a page. Twelve photos on a four-up layout make exactly three pages, each a 2 by 2 grid, and two-up places photos side by side.

Every photo is scaled to fit its cell with its aspect ratio kept, so a tall portrait photo is not stretched. With one photo per page, the page turns to landscape when the photo is wider than it is tall. You can also rotate a photo by 90, 180 or 270 degrees before it is placed, and add page numbers.

FAQ

Does converting lose image quality?

A little. Each photo is re-encoded as a JPEG before it goes into the PDF, and a rotated photo is encoded once more. A higher quality setting reduces the loss and makes the file larger.

Can I fix a sideways photo?

Yes. Use the rotate buttons on each photo to turn it left or right before you convert, so it lands upright on the page.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Decoding the HEIC files and building the PDF both happen in your browser, so the files stay on your device.
