Edit EPUB metadata without Calibre

EPUB files store metadata in an OPF (Open Packaging Format) XML file inside the archive. This tool reads that file, lets you edit every field in a clean form, and writes it back - all without sending your file anywhere.

The KDP readiness checklist checks whether your EPUB has the fields Amazon requires for self-publishing. Cover images are auto-scaled to 1600x2400 pixels (the recommended KDP cover ratio) before being embedded back into the EPUB.

The Calibre problem for self-publishers

Calibre is genuinely excellent software for managing a large ebook library. But for a first-time self-publisher who needs to fix the author name on their EPUB before the upload deadline, it is completely overkill. Installation takes several minutes, the interface presents dozens of options you don't understand, and half the functions require reading documentation before they make sense.

Cloud EPUB editors that skip the install exist, but they upload your manuscript to their servers - which raises questions about what happens to it there. Your manuscript is your work; it should stay on your machine.

Edit EPUB metadata in 60 seconds

Drop your EPUB and the KDP readiness checklist shows which required fields are populated and which are missing. Edit the fields (title, author, publisher, ISBN-13, description, language) and drop a new cover image if needed. The updated file passes standard EPUB validation and is ready for KDP, Kobo, or Draft2Digital upload.

FAQ

Will editing EPUB metadata break my ebook?

No. This tool only modifies the metadata fields in the OPF file inside the EPUB container. It does not touch chapter text, CSS, or fonts. The output EPUB passes standard validation and is compatible with Kindle, Kobo, Apple Books, and Adobe Digital Editions.

What fields does Amazon KDP require in an EPUB?

KDP requires title, author, and language at minimum. A cover image is also mandatory (minimum 1000px on the shortest side, 1.6:1 aspect ratio recommended). ISBN is optional for KDP but required for distribution through other retailers.

Can I edit the cover image?

Yes. Drag a new cover image (JPG or PNG) into the cover slot. The tool replaces the existing cover in the EPUB and scales it to the recommended 1600×2400px dimensions before embedding.
