How screen time reduction works
Calculating annual hours from daily cuts
Screen time savings are purely multiplicative: daily reduction times 365 days per year. If you currently use screens 6 hours daily but cut to 3 hours, you reclaim 3 hours per day. Over a year, that accumulates to 1,095 hours (3 hours × 365 days). The calculator converts this to relatable units: 45.6 full 24-hour days or 136.9 standard 8-hour work-days, so the impact becomes tangible rather than abstract.
Valuing your reclaimed time
The optional hourly value is a personal number. If you earn $50 per hour, each hour of reclaimed free time could be worth $50 in forgone earnings or earning capacity. At $75/hour, cutting 3 hours daily saves you $82,125 annually. But you can also use a subjective value: if you think your leisure time is worth $25/hour to you, use that. The calculator makes no assumptions about your time's actual market value - only that you can assign a number to it and multiply.
FAQ
How is time reclaimed calculated?
Time reclaimed is simply the difference between your current daily screen time and your target. For example, if you cut from 6 hours to 3 hours daily, you reclaim 3 hours per day. Multiplied by 365 days per year, that's 1,095 hours annually. The calculator also expresses this as full 24-hour days (45.6 days) or 8-hour work-days (136.9 days) for easier perspective.
Is the hourly value of time calculated from salary?
No, the hourly value you enter is whatever you decide it should be. It could be your hourly wage, your consulting rate, or a personal value you assign to free time. If you earn $50/hour, cutting 3 hours daily is worth $54,750 per year to you in reclaimed earning capacity. If you value your leisure time at $20/hour, the same cut is worth $21,900. The calculator multiplies your chosen rate by annual hours saved.
Does this account for rebound time usage?
No. This calculator assumes you will successfully maintain your new target screen time. In practice, people often revert to old habits or fill reclaimed screen time with different activities. The numbers show your best-case scenario. To track whether you're actually achieving the reduction, monitor your device screen time settings on your phone weekly and adjust your target if needed.
