Why cost-per-use beats a flat monthly total
A $20 subscription looks the same on a statement whether you opened it 60 times last month or twice. The calculator divides each tool's monthly cost by the uses you enter, so those two cases separate out to $0.33 a use and $10 a use.
Anything above $5 per use is flagged in the breakdown table with a "consider canceling?" badge. The comparison is strictly greater than, so a tool landing exactly on $5 stays unflagged.
The table also sorts by cost-per-use with the worst offender first, so the row most worth cutting sits at the top instead of somewhere in the middle of a long stack.
Annual plans hide their real monthly burn
Annual prices are divided by 12 before anything is compared, so a $180-a-year plan and a $15-a-month plan sit side by side at $15. The totals work the same way: monthly equivalents are summed, then multiplied by 12 for the annual figure.
SubDiet's guide to AI subscription overlap argues that overlapping assistants are where most of the waste sits, and offers a blunt rule for finding it: "Any tool unused for 30+ days is a cancellation candidate." A high cost-per-use is the same signal with a number attached to it.

Why is the threshold set at $5 per use?
It is a practical anchor rather than a hard rule. Most single AI tasks are worth well under $5 to most people, so a subscription costing more than that per actual use is usually a candidate for a cheaper tier or cancellation rather than clear-cut waste.
What if I don't know how many times I use a tool?
Leave the uses field blank for that row. The calculator skips both the cost-per-use figure and the high-cost flag for it, shows a dash in the table, and sorts that row to the bottom rather than guessing a number.
Does this handle tools bundled into a larger plan?
No. Each row is treated as a standalone subscription at the price you enter. If a tool comes bundled with something you already pay for and use, its real incremental cost is lower than its sticker price, and you would need to adjust the entered price to reflect that.
