Edit EPUB metadata without Calibre

EPUB files store metadata in an OPF (Open Packaging Format) XML file inside the archive. This tool reads that file, lets you edit every field in a clean form, and writes it back - all without sending your file anywhere.

The KDP readiness checklist checks whether your EPUB has the fields Amazon requires for self-publishing. Cover images are auto-scaled to 1600x2400 pixels (the recommended KDP cover ratio) before being embedded back into the EPUB.

Learn more: what's inside an EPUB's metadata

An EPUB is a ZIP with an OPF file inside

An .epub file is a ZIP archive. The editor finds the package file through META-INF/container.xml, then reads the book's title, author, publisher, description, language, date and identifiers from that OPF file as Dublin Core tags such as dc:creator.

It looks for the namespaced tag first and falls back to the plain tag name for files that were generated without proper namespacing. Series name, series number and subtitle are read from calibre-style meta tags.

Why identifiers get messy

An EPUB can carry several dc:identifier elements at once, for example a UUID, an ISBN and a store-specific ID. The editor looks for the one marked as an ISBN, either with an ISBN scheme attribute (the EPUB 2 style) or a value that starts with urn:isbn: (the EPUB 3 style), instead of assuming the first identifier is the right one.

What it does to the file and the cover

When you save, the editor rewrites the OPF and rebuilds the ZIP with the mimetype entry first and stored uncompressed, which EPUB readers expect. If you add a new cover it is resized to fit within 1600 by 2400 pixels and saved as a JPEG at 92% quality.

It finds an existing cover through the EPUB 2 cover meta tag, the EPUB 3 cover-image property, or an image whose id or filename contains "cover". The word count shown is an estimate from the first six chapters scaled to the full chapter count.

Keep your listing details consistent

Retailer rules about metadata are separate from the file. Kindlepreneur's guide to KDP account suspensions lists failing to match the title and subtitle on your cover with the information in your KDP dashboard as a violation. Check that the title you set here, the cover and the dashboard all agree.

FAQ

Why would an edited EPUB fail to open in a reader?

EPUB requires the mimetype file to be the first entry in the ZIP and stored uncompressed. A general-purpose ZIP tool can break that order. This editor writes it correctly, but a file re-zipped by hand afterwards may not open.

Is the file's internal metadata the same as my retailer dashboard?

No. The OPF file inside the EPUB and the fields you fill in on a publishing platform are separate records. Keep them consistent, but editing one does not change the other.

Can I change the cover image?

Yes. You can upload a new cover, and the editor resizes it to a JPEG and swaps it into the package. If the book has no cover, the editor adds one and registers it in the manifest.
