Learn more: how the PDF splitter works

Copying pages, not redrawing them

The tool uses the open-source pdf-lib library. The pdf-lib documentation describes copyPages as copying pages from a source document into another one. Your pages are copied into a new PDF, with the fonts and images they use. Nothing is rendered or compressed again, so the text and images in the result are the same as in the original.

The thumbnails you see come from a second library, pdf.js, which only draws previews on screen. The output file never passes through that step, which is why picking pages and saving them is quick even for a long document.

File size after a split

Each output file carries the resources its own pages need. A split of a 200-page scan made of large page images gives files that are as large per page as the original, since every image is copied unchanged. A part with only a few pages is small, but several parts can add up to more than the original when pages share fonts or images, because each part holds its own copy.

Rotation and protected files

The rotate setting for each output file adds to the rotation a page already has, the same way the preview shows it. A page that is already turned 90 degrees and set to rotate 90 comes out at 180.

The tool cannot copy pages from a PDF that is encrypted, because pdf-lib does not decrypt. It stops with a message and does not write a broken file. Remove the password or the restrictions in the program that created it, then try again.

Page ranges

You can type ranges such as 1-3, 7, 10-12, or click thumbnails to select pages. Page numbers start at 1, a range typed backwards such as 5-3 still works, and numbers beyond the last page are ignored. Each named output can then be saved on its own or all together in a ZIP.

FAQ

Does splitting lower the quality of my PDF?

No. Pages are copied with their original content, so nothing is recompressed or redrawn. What you see in the output is the same data as the source.

Can I rotate pages while splitting?

Yes. Each output file has a rotation setting of 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees, applied on top of the page's current rotation as the preview shows it.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The PDF libraries run in your browser, and your file is read and written on your own device.
