How bandwidth is shared in daisy chains
Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 5, and USB4 ports have a fixed total bandwidth that is shared among all daisy-chained devices. Thunderbolt 3/4 and USB4 v1 support 40 Gbps total, USB4 v2 supports 80 Gbps, and Thunderbolt 5 supports 80 Gbps with a 120 Gbps boost mode. When you chain multiple displays and drives through a single port, each device consumes part of this bandwidth budget. For example, a 4K 60Hz display requires roughly 12.5 Gbps, and an NVMe SSD requires roughly 24 Gbps - chaining both on a 40 Gbps port would consume all available bandwidth (36.5 Gbps used, 3.5 Gbps remaining). If devices exceed the port's total, they become bottlenecked and cannot achieve their rated speeds.
Daisy-chaining limits and real-world factors
While a port can theoretically daisy-chain many devices, bandwidth limits are the practical constraint. Adding a hub, splitter, or cable with poor shielding can reduce available bandwidth due to overhead. Additionally, some manufacturers report display bandwidth requirements conservatively to account for future display technologies and cable variations. Can I chain multiple 4K displays on a single Thunderbolt port?
It depends on the port and the displays. Two 4K60 displays would require roughly 25 Gbps, which fits easily on a 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 4 port with headroom left over. But a 4K144 display (25 Gbps) plus a 4K60 (12.5 Gbps) would use 37.5 Gbps, leaving only 2.5 Gbps unused. Adding another device would exceed the bandwidth. Why is my daisy-chained NVMe drive slow?
If your combined devices exceed the port's total bandwidth, the devices become bottlenecked and cannot achieve their rated speeds. For example, chaining a 4K 144Hz display (25 Gbps) and an NVMe SSD (24 Gbps) on a 40 Gbps port uses 49 Gbps - 9 Gbps over limit. One or both devices will run slower. Consider using a second Thunderbolt port or unplugging lower-priority devices to free bandwidth.
Should I upgrade to Thunderbolt 5 for more bandwidth?
Thunderbolt 5's 80 Gbps (or 120 Gbps boost) is beneficial if you regularly daisy-chain high-bandwidth devices like NVMe drives and high-resolution displays. For simple tasks (one display, occasional SSD use), Thunderbolt 4's 40 Gbps is usually sufficient. Upgrade if your current setup shows bandwidth overload symptoms or you plan demanding device chains in the future.
