How pass-through power works

USB-C Power Delivery (PD) docks accept a power adapter's wattage and split it: some power stays in the dock to run displays, USB ports, and other peripherals; the remainder is "passed through" to charge your laptop. For example, if you plug in a 100W adapter, but the dock with three monitors and multiple ports draws 20W for itself, only 80W is available for your laptop to charge. The dock's self-use draw depends on what is connected and active - more displays and peripherals mean higher draw. This calculator subtracts the dock's self-use from the adapter's total rated wattage to show the actual power available to your laptop.

Charging, trickle charge, and battery drain

If pass-through power meets or exceeds your laptop's charging requirement, your battery charges. If pass-through power is positive but less than the laptop's rated draw, the laptop runs on the available power and the battery charge stays roughly level (called trickle charging). If pass-through power is zero or negative, the dock is drawing more power than the adapter can supply - your laptop will drain battery to make up the difference, even while plugged in. Modern laptops typically need 45-100W depending on model and workload; thin laptops often need less, while gaming or workstation laptops may need more.

Why does my dock need so much power for itself?

USB-C docks with multiple display outputs (especially Thunderbolt docks with two 6K displays) have high self-use draw. Each external display, USB hub, and other high-powered peripheral adds to the dock's consumption. A simple USB-C adapter with just charging and a few low-power ports might draw only 5-10W, while a loaded dock with dual 6K displays can draw 20-30W.

Can I charge my laptop faster by unplugging peripherals?

Yes. Unplugging display outputs, USB devices, and other high-draw peripherals lowers the dock's self-use and leaves more power for your laptop. For example, if you disconnect an external display that was drawing 15W, that 15W becomes available for laptop charging, which may speed up charging noticeably depending on your needs.

Should I use a dock at all if the pass-through power is low?

A dock with low pass-through power can still be useful if you only need a trickle charge to stay roughly at the same battery level while working. However, if you need fast charging or your laptop battery drains while using the dock, you may want a higher-wattage power adapter, fewer active peripherals, or a different dock entirely.
