How sauna heater sizing works

How heater size is calculated

Sauna heater size depends on room volume and wall material. The standard starting point is about 0.6 kilowatts per cubic meter for well-insulated wood-paneled rooms. Concrete and glass lose heat faster, so they need stronger heaters - roughly 30% more power for concrete and 50% more for glass. For example, a 7 by 6 by 7 foot wood room is about 83 cubic meters, requiring a 6 kW heater. The same room with concrete walls would need about 7.8 kW instead.

The difference between heater types

Electric heaters are sized in kilowatts and heat the room through element-generated heat and rock thermal mass. Wood-burning heaters are rated by the stove's firebox size and ability to heat a given volume - the sizing suggests how many cords of wood to budget per season. Far-infrared panels work at lower wattages because they emit targeted heat rather than heating all the air, so a room needing 6 kW of electric heat might only need 4-5 kW of infrared panels. Always check your heater's manual for its actual cubic-meter or cubic-foot rating.

Why does wall material affect heater size so much?

Concrete and glass are poor insulators. They absorb heat from the room and conduct it to the outside, so the heater must work harder to maintain temperature. Wood paneling, especially with insulation behind it, traps heat much more effectively. In poorly insulated spaces, you may need even larger heaters than this calculator suggests.

How accurate is the wood cord estimate?

The estimate assumes an average wood-burning stove and well-seasoned wood. Real consumption depends on wood moisture content, stove efficiency, how hot you heat, and outdoor temperature. Dry wood burns more efficiently and produces more heat per cord than green wood. The calculator gives a planning range - budget 10 to 20 percent extra for waste and seasonal variation.

Can far-infrared panels replace my electric heater?

Infrared panels can warm a sauna but operate differently than traditional electric stoves. They emit directed heat that warms your body and surfaces directly, rather than heating the air. This works for relaxation but may not get the air temperature or rock heat that traditional saunas depend on. Confirm your location allows them and that you're comfortable with the different heating experience.
