Why advertised speeds never match real-world throughput

Powerline adapter marketing claims can be misleading. A "2000 Mbps" adapter advertises the theoretical maximum under laboratory conditions - clean, short runs on modern wiring with no interference. Real homes have much noisier electrical environments: refrigerators, air conditioners, switching power supplies, and other devices all generate electromagnetic noise that degrades the powerline signal. Additionally, marketing claims often combine speeds across multiple channels or aggregated link rates that don't translate to usable throughput. Expect 20-50% of advertised speed in best-case scenarios; older wiring or long distances reduce this further. A 2000 Mbps adapter might deliver 300-500 Mbps real throughput in a typical home.

How wiring age and distance degrade signal quality

Modern house wiring (post-2000) uses twisted pairs and better shielding, which reduces signal attenuation and noise coupling. Pre-1980 wiring (especially knob-and-tube or aluminum) was not designed for high-frequency communication and introduces significant signal loss. Distance from the breaker panel also matters - each 10 meters of cable introduces additional attenuation. Connections on different circuits or different panels are even worse because the signal must couple through the main breaker and transformer. If you need gigabit performance, run Ethernet cable or upgrade your WiFi instead. Powerline is a compromise technology for situations where cable is impractical.

Does the age of my adapter chipset matter?

Yes. Newer chipset generations (AV2, OFDM-based) are more efficient at handling noise and interference, and older adapters based on HomePlug AV1 perform worse in noisy environments.
