Learn more about FIT files and activity data

What is a FIT file and which GPS devices produce them?

FIT (Flexible and Interoperable Data Transfer) is a binary format developed by Garmin for recording activity data. Garmin, Wahoo, Suunto, Polar, and most GPS sports watches and cycling computers save activities as .fit files containing GPS tracks, heart rate, power, cadence, and lap data.

How do I export a FIT file from Garmin Connect?

In Garmin Connect web, open any activity, click the gear icon or three-dot menu, and select 'Export Original'. This downloads the original .fit file from the device sync. You can then analyse it locally in this tool without uploading your private GPS data anywhere.

Can I convert a FIT file to CSV for Excel or Google Sheets analysis?

Yes. Use the CSV export button to download all activity data including GPS coordinates, heart rate, power, cadence, elevation, and timestamp for every second of the activity. The CSV opens directly in Excel or Google Sheets for custom charting, zone analysis, or sharing with a coach.

About FIT files

What is a .fit file?

FIT (Flexible and Interoperable Data Transfer) is a binary format developed by Garmin and ANT+ for storing fitness activity data. Garmin Edge computers, Fenix and Forerunner watches, Wahoo ELEMNT, and Polar devices all export activities as .fit files.

What data does this extract?

Every per-second record in the file: GPS coordinates, altitude, heart rate, cadence, speed, power (if you have a power meter), grade, and distance. Plus an activity summary with totals and averages from the session message.

Is my activity data private?

Yes - everything runs in your browser using JavaScript. Your .fit file never leaves your device. No servers, no accounts, no tracking of your routes.

How many files can I parse for free?

20 files per day on the free plan. BentoUtils Pro gives you unlimited parses.
