BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic measure. It does not account for muscle mass, bone density, or body fat distribution. Athletes and highly muscular individuals often have a high BMI without excess body fat.

Learn more: how BMI is calculated, its limits, and FAQ

How BMI is calculated

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². For someone 175cm (1.75m) tall weighing 75kg: 75 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 75 ÷ 3.06 = 24.5 - inside the WHO's 18.5-24.9 "normal weight" range.

BMI thresholds

The World Health Organization classifies adult BMI as underweight (below 18.5), normal (18.5-24.9), overweight (25-29.9), and obese (30+). For East Asian populations, the WHO Expert Consultation recommends lower cut-offs - overweight at 23+, obese at 27.5+ - because health risk rises at a lower BMI in these populations. Does age or sex change the calculation?

The formula is identical for adult men and women - only the interpretation differs by context. Children and teens (under 20) are assessed against age- and sex-specific growth charts instead of the fixed adult thresholds, since healthy body composition shifts through puberty. For adults over 65, a slightly higher BMI (closer to 25-27) is sometimes protective rather than risky, since age-related muscle loss can mask fat gain at a "normal" BMI. The 18.5-24.9 range above is calibrated for ages 20-65.

Why BMI alone can mislead

BMI can't tell muscle from fat or see where fat is stored. A heavily muscled athlete can show "overweight" with no excess body fat. If you train regularly, pair this with our training zones calculator or workout volume tracker for a fuller picture - and use the waist-to-height ratio above, which is more predictive of cardiovascular risk than BMI alone.

FAQ

What is the healthy weight range for 175cm?

Roughly 56.7-76.6 kg (BMI 18.5-25), or 56.7-70.4 kg using Asian thresholds (BMI 18.5-23). Enter your own height above for an exact figure.

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

No - BMI doesn't separate muscle mass from fat mass. Waist-to-height ratio and body-fat percentage are better indicators for muscular or highly trained individuals.
